Why Use a Tailor Rather Than a Department Store or Boutique

When looking to purchase that really great suit, we are confronted by a choice of the department store or boutique, offering a similar off the peg service with the occasional offering of alterations to customize the fit, or a tailor. A tailor does not necessarily mean made to measure, many offer off the peg with customized fit too, a good value compromise between a bespoke suit and the off the peg alternatives.

However, it is the ability to create a true bespoke garment that is the real selling point of visiting a tailor, and in comparison to the designer brands found in boutiques, the cost difference is minimal, it can in some cases be cheaper to go with the tailor. The experience is nothing like the department store of course, choose the style, choose the fabric, choose the lining, be measured, a perfect tailor made garment exactly as you want. The tailor can change the way a suit or garment hangs off you to even within the chosen style, ensuring that you get the precise look that you want. This is all a far cry from buying off the peg of course, and becomes more of an experience than a simple retail purchase.

The only thing that really matters though is, of course, what you end up with for your money. Going to a tailor rather than seeking out a designer brand suit will likely see you end up with a better fitting and more comfortable suit, made from higher quality fabrics that exudes quality like nothing else you own. Now, for most of us a tailor made garment is not the choice for every suit or garment we need, cost is always going to be a factor, but for that special, high quality, statement suit, then it is not such an expensive option. Compared to many designer brands, it’s on par or cheaper, for what will be a higher quality garment.

Each option has a place, and most of us will use department stores and boutiques all the time, but for that’s special item of clothing, what we should never do is think a tailor is not a viable choice, because it is, and you will love the clothes you get from taking that option.

You raise some pretty good points in the article, especially about the ability to completely customize your suit at a tailor. As is pointed out, at most tailor shops you can choose the lining, colors, size, pretty much everything about your suit. At a department store however you can only choose from pre-made suits and only alter them slightly.

It's so cool that you talked about tailor-made suits and how they'll fit your body shape perfectly! A few weeks ago, my sister sent out her wedding invitations, so I think it's time to start looking for a suit! I've never visited a tailor's workshop before, but it sounds like a great idea, so I'll be sure to look into it! Thank you for the great advice on how a tailor's work comes with high-quality features!

My son is getting married, and I want to make sure that I get the right suit. It makes sense that I might want to get one tailored to fit me properly! That seems like a good way to ensure that I look good on my son's big day.

I love that you talked about how a tailor can change the way an article of clothing hangs on us. I think I would like to see one to get my dress to fit me perfectly. It's because I have a pear-shaped body, so the dress I got is loose at the top while just the right fit at the bottom.

Thank you for pointing out that the primary selling point of going to a tailor is the chance to get truly tailored clothing. The cost difference between visiting a tailor and purchasing designer labels from shops is tiny, and in certain circumstances, it may even be less expensive. My sister wants to sew her own wedding outfit. I advise her to take her design to a clothing tailor to save money.
