How to Choose Between Made-to-Order, Made-to-Measure, and Bespoke at L&S

There are three ways into a suit at L&S. They are not grades of virtue. They are different answers to a short list of questions: how your body sits on a pattern, how much time you can give the fittings, what you want the jacket to become in five years, and what you want to spend on the first one. If you want the prices first, they are written out in what a custom suit actually costs in New York in 2026. This page is the choice.

The three doors, plainly

Made-to-Order is a house style, sized to your measurements. Quality construction — not full canvas. A measurement session and delivery. Three to four weeks. This is the introduction. It is the right door when you want a first custom suit at the entry price and you are close enough to a house block that sizing it will get you home.

Made-to-Measure is the L&S master pattern, adjusted to you. Full floating canvas. Hand-finished details. One fitting. Four to six weeks. The master pattern has been refined over five decades of cutting for New York bodies. It is not a live drape. It is not a unique pattern drafted from scratch. For most commissions, it is everything the suit needs to be. Full canvas begins here.

Bespoke is a live drape on your body and a pattern that did not exist before you walked in. Three to four fittings on a first suit. Eight to twelve weeks the first time, six to eight after. Full floating canvas. The pattern is stored. The second suit starts where the first one finished. This is the right door when the master pattern cannot reach you — or when you want the pattern to be yours, and you are prepared to give it the fittings.

A short way to choose

Ask four questions and stop there.

Time. Can you come back three or four times over two or three months, or do you need one fitting and a finished jacket in six weeks? Bespoke asks for the calendar. Made-to-measure asks for one return visit. Made-to-order asks for a measurement session and a delivery date.

Body. Do you wear a standard drop without a fight — shoulder, chest, waist, posture roughly where a New York block expects them to be? Made-to-order or made-to-measure will serve you. Do you carry a low shoulder, a full chest and a narrow waist, a forward stance, a seat that ready-to-wear has never understood? That is what the live drape is for. We will say so in the room. We will not upsell you into four fittings if the master pattern, adjusted, will do the work.

Keep. Is this a suit you expect to wear for a decade, with a second pair of trousers later? Start at made-to-measure so the chest is canvassed. Is this a first look at custom before you commit to canvas and a stored pattern? Made-to-order exists for that, and we say what it is not.

Budget. The floor is $1,295, $2,695, or $3,695 before cloth. If the canvassed jacket is the goal and the live-drape pattern is not required, do not spend the bespoke money out of pride. The cheaper honest door is the correct door.

Who we usually point where

Most first-time clients on the Upper East Side should hear this plainly: made-to-measure is usually the right door. Full canvas at a price that leaves room for good cloth. One fitting. Done in four to six weeks. That is the standard of the house.

Made-to-order is right when you are commissioning a first custom suit and want the house cut at the entry price. It is also right when the timeline is tight and you understand you are not buying a floating canvas. We would rather sell you that jacket honestly than dress a fused chest in the language of Savile Row.

Bespoke is right when the pattern should be yours. A build the master pattern cannot reach. A man who already knows he will be back for the third and fourth commission. A first suit only when you have the weeks and you want the process, not because the word sounds better on a dinner invitation. The appointment is not a quiz. You do not need to know the difference between a peak lapel and a notch before you come in. You need to know how you live — office, travel, how often a jacket is on your back, what has never fitted — and you need an hour. We take a full set of measurements. We note posture and stance. We put cloth in your hands. Then we tell you which tier fits. Including the cheaper one, when the cheaper one is right.
