He has seen $8,000 on another. Both claim to be bespoke. Both cannot be describing the same garment. What the three numbers include

The $1,295 Made-to-Order suit is a house style, sized to your measurements. Quality construction. A measurement session and delivery. Three to four weeks. It is the introduction to custom, and it is honest about what it is not: made-to-order is not full canvas. That construction is reserved for the two tiers above it. If you want a first custom suit at the entry price, this is the door.

The $2,695 Made-to-Measure suit starts with the L&S master pattern — refined over five decades of cutting for New York bodies — and adjusts it to yours. Full floating canvas. Hand-finished details. One fitting. Four to six weeks. For most first-time clients this is the right door. Full canvas is the thing that separates a suit that ages from a suit that expires, and this is the first tier where we build it.

The $3,695 Bespoke suit is a live drape on your body and a pattern created from scratch. Three to four fittings on a first suit, one or two after. Eight to twelve weeks the first time, six to eight weeks once the pattern is yours. Full floating canvas. The pattern is stored for life. Every commission after starts where the last one finished. That is what the extra money is for: time on the body, not a different logo.

What fabric does to the price

Houses that hide the cloth conversation are hiding the real number. The starting prices above assume a sound mill cloth — the kind of mid-weight worsted we would put on our own backs for a working week in Manhattan. Move up in fineness, rarity, or season and the garment costs more because the raw material costs more. That is not markup theatre. A metre of Super 150s from a mill we trust does not cost what a metre of commodity Super 150s printed on a hangtag costs. The number on the selvedge is a claim. The hand, the recovery, the way the cloth takes an iron — those are facts. We stock bolts from Loro Piana, Dormeuil, Holland & Sherry, Scabal, and Vitale Barberis Canonico. You hold them up to the light. You do not pick from a thumbnail.

A useful way to think about it: the tier buys the pattern and the construction. The cloth buys the years. Two made-to-measure suits at the same $2,695 starting price can live very different lives if one is a workhorse 11-ounce worsted and the other is a delicate high-super that will shine at the seat in eighteen months of daily wear. We will tell you which is which. For a first commission we usually steer you toward the cloth that works hardest — a dark mid-weight — and save the adventurous bolt for the second.

Why $999 internet bespoke is not the same garment

The internet is full of suits that use the word bespoke and a price that would not cover a week of one tailor in Manhattan. Some of them are honest made-to-order programs with a block, a remote measurement form, and a factory that cuts close to a standard. Some of them are fused jackets with a marketing sentence. Almost none of them are a live drape, a unique pattern, and three fittings on 61st Street. Using the same word for both does not make them the same object.

A $999 suit is almost always built on a fused chest — the outer cloth glued to a synthetic interlining. It looks sharp on a hanger. It bubbles. It does not mould to you over years the way a floating canvas does. The pattern is a block, adjusted by a form or a video call. There is no basted shell on your body.
